“Take Me Back And My Funky Ass Band”

Well, I must admit I’m a little low on material this week.  I’ve been panicing about a new topic for this week’s blog for the past couple of days, and I am coming up a bit short, so I’m going to keep this one light.  I recently managed to restore my entire music collection off various dead hard drives and iPods, so I’ve been rediscovering some old favorites.  There are some albums that always take me back to a very specific place and mood, so I guess you can say I’ve been doing a bit of time traveling.  Of course, there’s always those “ex-whatever” songs or albums that get a little tainted along the way (Gnarls Barkley’s St. Elsewhere was completely ruined for me), but after a certain number of years, those can be fun to pull out, too.  A good “What the hell was I thinking?” moment is always enjoyable.

My favorite albums are always the ones I can go back to after several years’ hiatus and have a “Holy Crap” moment all over again.  There are some albums that just flat out change your life and change the way you think about music.  They may not be monumental in the grand scheme of the record industry, but the record industry isn’t exactly a monument to the ways in which music can touch your soul.  For better or for worse, here’s a few of my “Holy Crap” albums that have shaped the way I listen to music today.  In no particular order:

1. Depeche Mode – Songs of Faith And Devotion

2. Beck – Odelay

3. Busta Rhymes – Extinction Level Event

4. Janet Jackson – Rhythm Nation

5. The Red Hot Chili Peppers – What Hits?

6. Blur – Parklife

7. Jamiroquai – Travelling Without Moving

8. The Rolling Stones – Jump Back

9. Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder

10. INXS – Kick

Listening to: Ol’ Dirty Bastard – “Got Your Money”
