Ode to the text message
Text message, oh text message…how I love your lack of emphasis. Recently, I have had many an interesting experience with text messages, and it made me wonder just how out of touch we have all become that we have actually starting substituting text messages for conversation. When did this happen? When did we all decide that forming complete sentences with out the use of abbreviations for 4-letter words was so painstaking? Between e-mail, networking websites, and text messages we have all forgotten the correct usage of grammar and general conversational techniques, and I have recently become more and more aware of people doing most of their business through text messages. Is this what we want? Will we settle for this constant barrage of information at all hours of the night, or can we start setting some boundaries?
In the past week, I have actually done business, been broken up with, reconnected with an old friend, and been turned down for a date all in text messages (no, seriously). I urge you to consider the precedent this sets for your personal and professional relationships and decide whether or not you are acquiesced to being a soul-less image on a screen. Personalities are what make people great in this business anyway, so when did we decide to go without?

About
I (was) a Music Industry Studies and Vocal Performance major at Loyola University in New Orleans. I (did) graduate in May, and this is my attempt at re-gaining some perspective on the world that I have lost touch with. I (did) learn proper grammar skills, but I (don’t) much like using them. Through personal changes, I hope to change the way that I and the people that I associate with view the music industry. I invite you to join me and log your progress along the way.
